Growing up in Colombia, up and coming designer Carlos Luna, was very inspired by his family, grand fashion shows and “spectacular models†he saw on television. One in particular, Claudia Schiffer, has always struck to be his favorite, deeming her his ultimate fashion icon. Pursuing his dreams, Carlos attended Pasons The New School and upon graduation, was honored to show his collection at Fall 2011 Fashion Week in New York. His Fall 2011/2012 collection is captured to “a pioneering woman who wants to be sophisticated and portray a subdued sexiness.  I wanted to know just a lil’ more about this Columbian born man who found “good taste in fashion†to be “disappearing.
Q and A with Up and Coming Designer Carlos Luna
Growing up in Colombia, what inspired you to pursue your dreams and become a fashion designer, move to New York City and attend The New School at Parsons?
Growing up in Colombia my inspiration was my mother who was and still is very talented and agile, both at sewing and weaving. Also growing up with my three sisters helped me to make decisions about what to wear and many times I would make alterations to their clothes. In addition to my family, I was greatly influenced by watching the big fashion shows and the spectacular models on TV.
I moved to New York looking for an opportunity both for me and my family. For many unforeseen circumstances, I was forced to leave my dream behind. I started to work in different areas that had nothing to do with fashion, until one day I woke up and realized I had abandon my aspirations, left my dream behind, and I then made the decision to start to research on how I could make my dream come true. Through my research I found out that is not impossible, and at the same time I found out that many of the best designers had studied at Parsons The New School. Without hesitation, I started to pursue my dream until today.
What inspired your collection?
The inspiration for this collection was the city of New York; its diverse cultures, ethnicities, and extraordinary architecture. I feel that it they are no longer reflected, as they once were. Today, there is not that sophistication like there once was, and the good taste about fashion is disappearing. That sophistication is what made the streets of NY seem like big runway shows.
Only what you can see right now is the famous trendy look, which is being diverted to a dirty look or too sloppy in my opinion.
With my designs I would like to show that girls can be dressed trendy and sophisticated at the same time, and return that characteristic to New York City as a fashion icon.

Could you describe the typical girl who will rock your clothes?     Â
I would describe the typical girl who will rock my clothes is a pioneering woman. A girl sure of her self, who is not afraid to mix colors and styles. A girl who loves fashion and is ready for a change. A girl who likes to feel beautiful, sophisticated and sexy, without being vulgar.Â
Who is your ultimate fashion icon? Ho do they inspire you in your goals and aspirations, and in your collection?
Since I was a child I was delighted seeing Claudia Schiffer in fashion shows, her charisma, poise and elegance that she reflected captivated me; I can say she is my ultimate fashion icon.
I think it has helped me move on, because as she moved on to the big fashion shows I would like to be there too but in my case as a fashion designer.
It would be an honor to see Claudia Schiffer wearing my designs.

How would you describe a trendsetter?
For me a trendsetter is a person who fights to impose a fashion style, leaving a legacy which is real and does not go out style.
